In 2009, the Centre for Peace, Nonviolence and Human Rights - Osijek established an award and accolades for the promotion of peacebuilding, nonviolence and human rights in honor of one of its founders, peace activist and humanist Krunoslav Sukić, whose education, knowledge and actions were motivated by recognizing and respecting the dignity, integrity and rights of every human being, and beyond - every living being and all creation. He was a conscientious objector. It represents publicly little-known and recognized men and women who, despite the war and in the war and in such difficult, almost confusing transitional times, have done and are doing everything possible for them to progress as a society and political community through non-violent methods towards a more just, democratic society - where individuals and the community will have space to develop their creative potentials, but not at the expense of the other and without fear of the other - but to nurture solidarity and cooperation, We maintain and promote peace.
The Krunoslav Sukić Award and Accolades for the Promotion of Peacebulding, Nonviolence and Human Rights are awarded for a special contribution to the protection and promotion of human rights and freedoms and the consistent promotion of the culture of peace and non-violence.
By awarding awards and accolades, we want to contribute to the visibility of solidary, consistent, especially creative and courageous actions of individuals in preventing violence, reducing social injustices and building a democratic society based on a culture of non-violence. We believe that celebrating and thanking for acting for the common good encourages individuals to use their civic political power in favor of positive social change.
Over the past years, this, the first peace award in Croatia, has become a recognizable place of gathering, celebration and encouragement. Its reputation lies in the richness of excellence and dedication of
its winners, who come from eleven counties, including the easternmost, Vukovar-Srijem and southern, Dubrovnik-Neretva, and from the region and Europe. The award has a national, regional and international reach. We present the award as "common ground" – a
common commitment to a
peaceful society,
although the
laureates differ in many ways and come from different social classes, groups and generations. That is, this is the vision that we, the people who coordinate the maintenance of
the Award, want to realize.
